The Time’s Up movement against sexual harassment has left a lasting mark on “Jurassic World” star Bryce Dallas Howard.

“I’ve been [wimpy] about it in the past. I didn’t want people to think I wasn’t grateful for opportunities,” she said about asking for a higher salary. “I also get scared off by every threat during a negotiation. They’ll say, ‘We’ll just have to find someone else,’ and I back off. You can’t do that.”

Howard, who appears on the May cover of Redbook, opened up to the magazine about gender inequality in Hollywood.

“I’m not a spender. I live in a three-bedroom house — in fact, we just downsized. I know that we’re privileged; we don’t have to worry about paying our rent or our medical bills,” said Howard, who has two children with actor Seth Gabel.

“But I wish people knew that this is what the life of most successful female celebrities is,” she continued. “What we get paid is totally, completely, astronomically different than what male celebrities get paid. And for women of color, it’s a hundred times worse.”

Howard said the gender pay gap is surprising even to her father, Ron Howard, the former child actor turned Oscar-winning director.

“Even my dad has been shocked at how expensive it is to be a woman in the industry,” she said. “You’re told that it’s important to have a manager as well as an agent, and for a guy that’s not as important. That’s 20 percent out of your paycheck rather than 10 percent.”

Although she grew up with a famous father, Howard did not have an overly privileged childhood.

“My mom (Cheryl Howard) grew up in poverty and was terrified that her privileged children were not going to be contributing members of society,” Howard said. “I realize now, as a parent, that some of the things she did to follow through on teachable moments were a bit extreme. But other things, like we don’t have trust funds and were told, ‘You’re 14 — you need to get a job,’ I’m so grateful for.”

Howard also recalled her first job.

“I started working at a restaurant when I was 14, and I’d be like, I just got yelled at by a customer,” she said. “OK, I survived. Those moments made me feel like a capable person, and a lot of kids I knew growing up didn’t.”

Howard will be back alongside Chris Pratt in the sequel “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” in June, but this time her character Claire has swapped out her infamous heels for more practical boots.

“The first film for me was so much more challenging, but I didn’t realize it until I had boots on!” Howard said. “Claire’s a girl who can totally sprint in heels, but maximum effort in boots is much easier.”

I will definitely picking this novel up when it’s released!

It’s finally happening. The Jurassic Park universe is canonically expanding beyond the films. One of the most requested things from fans has continuously been an expansion of the fiction, whether it be via an animated series, comics, novels, or more. It now seems Universal has listened, and the first expansion will be coming May 2018 in the form of a Young Adult novel by Random House Books.

The novel, seemingly awaiting a more formal title, is currently titled ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Hardcover Young Adult Novel’. While the title isn’t much to go off of, Random House has also provided an exciting synopsis on what readers can expect:

Discover the beginnings of one of Jurassic World‘s most beloved characters–Claire Dearing–in this original action-packed young adult novel.

During the events of Jurassic World, Claire Dearing faced the savage fury of dinosaurs unleashed . . . but it wasn’t the first time. In this entirely new coming-of-age story, Claire lands an elite internship working for Simon Masrani and soon discovers his plans to build an all-new theme park–Jurassic World! Along the way, Claire establishes valuable relationships with both her peers and the prehistoric creatures she studies, but when the situation turns dangerous, she begins to see the dinosaurs in a different light. Fans of Jurassic World will delight in filling in the gaps of Claire’s past, all while gaining insights into the experiences that transformed her into the strong woman we know today.

May 08, 2018 | 304 Pages | Young Adult

The Young Adult fiction genre is typically considered to be written for ages 12-20’s, though the exact age range isn’t particularly defined, nor does it dictate who can enjoy the writings. This isn’t the first time the franchise had side stories via books, as the Jurassic Park Adventures series based on Eric Kirby’s adventures existed, but those targeted younger ages and were widely considered non-canon by fans.

The timeframe for this prequel novel is interesting, as it seems to begin before Jurassic World was event built, and will likely dive deep into the backstory of how Masrani Global handled InGen assets, and became the corporation we saw in the 2015 film. While it follows Claire’s perspective, the novel will quite possibly cross paths with individuals like Dr. Henry Wu, Vic Hoskisn, and other players, like the already confirmed Simon Masrani.

Will we see the cleanup of Nublar, the construction of Jurassic World, and inception of of ideas like the Indominus Rex in this novel? Time will tell – and hopefully it may even clarify longstanding question like the fate of Isla Nublar, why Hammond endorsed Jurassic World after his character motivation shift in The Lost World, and perhaps dig deep into pieces of the fiction the films have never touched upon.

But most off all, the novel will take us through the character evolution, motivation, and growth of Claire Dearing (played by Bryce Dallas Howard in the films), who Colin Trevorrow has previously stated is main character of the Jurassic World trilogy. It’s especially great to see a leading women take the spotlight and kick off the official Jurassic expanded universe, where as the easy and expected route would be putting someone like Owen Grady in the spotlight.

We’re excited, and hope this is only the first book of an exciting Jurassic World EU – the opportunities are endless, and we can’t wait to read the novel! If this is only the tip of the spear, perhaps in time a Dr. Henry Wu book series will come as well, detailing the timeline between Jurassic Park and Jurassic World, explaining how and why he comes off so cold in World, and dive deep into science of InGen not seen since Michael Crichton created the franchise.

Finally, dinosaur enthusiasts also have a publication to look forward to, which also seems to dive into the expanded fiction of Jurassic World – the ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Dinosaur Survival Guide’:

Relive the excitement of the blockbuster film Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom–which opens to US audiences on June 22, 2018–with this must-have survival guide!

Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom releases in theaters on June 22, 2018, bringing with it all the wonder, adventure, and thrills of one of the most popular and successful franchises in cinema history. This all-new motion picture event sees the return of favorite characters and dinosaurs, including Blue, the Velociraptor; Tyrannosaurus rex; and Mosasaurus–along with new breeds more awe-inspiring and terrifying than ever before!

This indispensable full-color survival guide features all the facts about the Jurassic World dinosaurs that you need to know to survive on the island–as well as the top-secret history of how it all began.

May 08, 2018 | 80 Pages | 6-9 years

Top secret history of how it all began? Say no more. Perhaps this visual guide will finally give a defined canonical explanation of the dinosaur variations seen throughout the franchise!

Let us know if you will be picking up the Claire prequel novel, and what stories you hope the expanded universe digs into! And as always, stay tuned for the latest news.

Can’t decide on your next travel destination? Bryce Dallas Howard recommends New Zealand. Thanks to her Jurassic World shooting schedule, which has taken her to the country for months at a time since the first film’s release in 2015, she has quickly moved from “tourist” to “semi-local.” When she’s not shooting alongside her Jurassic World co-star Chris Pratt (the sequel hits theaters in 2018), you can find her exploring New Zealand’s vast green hills, breathtaking oceans, and hip shops.

“New Zealand is this magical dreamland,” she tells InStyle. “It’s like a utopia where the people radiate kindness and the adventures of the natural world call to you.”

If that’s not enough to convince you, Howard, who’s now a brand ambassador for Tourism New Zealand, shares her top five secret spots to explore. Check them out below.

PAPER PLANE IN MOUNT MAUNGANUI
“I wish I could live in this store!” Howard says. “It’s the brick-and-mortar of one of New Zealand’s coolest online stores (paperplanestore.com). In essence, it’s a carefully curated collection of very stylish and beautiful products. If you are in the neighborhood and want to pile on a gluttony of cuteness, visit Sugar Town Cake Parlour, too. The name says it all.”

COMMONSENSE ORGANICS IN WELLINGTON
“In Wellington, I visit Commonplace Organics daily,” she tells us. “It’s your one-stop, ethical grocery shop. I felt like I was part of a community whenever I was in there, and marveled at the variety and selection. There are many New Zealand products I’m dying to export. Plus, its next door neighbor, Hot Yoga of New Zealand, complements Commonsense quite nicely.”

EAST CAPE
“One of the most under-visited places in New Zealand is the East Cape,” she says. “It’s the first in the world to welcome the sunrise, which makes for a magical experience. Not many tourists visit since it’s a region off the beaten track, but it’s just as beautiful as the rest of the country.”

AORAKI MACKENZIE DARK SKY RESERVE
“The most incredible place to see stars and the Southern Lights in New Zealand is the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve,” she says. “It’s a breathtaking view of heaven.”

HOKITIKA GORGE
“If you want to see water that’s naturally the color of blue Gatorade, make your way to Hokitika Gorge,” she says. “These stunning glacial pools can be viewed from fun swing bridges and short trails built for exploring.”

Christy September 4th, 2017

Wickaninnish Inn
Vancouver Island, Canada

“‘When we were living in Vancouver my husband took me here to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary and my birthday. Tofino is a long drive and a three-hour ferry ride away, but the journey was epic, a bit like a Miyazaki film. The inn is right on the water; it was so dramatic, stormy and romantic.'”

Kaua’i Marriott Resort
Hawaii

‘Kauai, also known as the Garden Island, is the most untouched of all the Hawaiian islands. Also, a lot of the Jurassic Park films were shot on Kauai. The hotel is massive; it’s such a relaxing place to be. After a 15-minute drive you’ll find organic-juice shops, a dojo where I did kick-boxing, and sweet little villages. It’s a wonderful balance.’

QT Museum Wellington
North Island, New Zealand

‘The town of Wellington is like Williamsburg, New York, but on the ocean and surrounded by woods. This is a design hotel filled with contemporary art, and it’s like nothing you’ve ever seen. Normally hotels go for the more traditional, something that works for everybody, but not this place. It really represents the aesthetic of an art dealer and is a bit like staying in a museum.’

COMO Parrot Cay
Turks & Caicos

‘When I was growing up, we would always go wherever my dad [director Ron Howard] was shooting a film. So our family holidays would be a road trip somewhere near where we lived in Greenwich, Connecticut. Then when I was 18 my mum brought me here – just the two of us – for a week. It was a side of the planet I had never been to, and it was exquisite: the beaches, the candlelit yoga, the amazing, fancy food. Ringo Starr was there at the same time. I haven’t had an experience like that since; it was such a shock how fancy it was.’

If you are ever planning on visiting New Zealand, our lovely Bryce has some recommendations 🙂

Bryce Dallas Howard is famous for appearing in films like The Help, Jurassic Park and Pete’s Dragon, but the actress’s latest role is tourism ambassador for New Zealand!

A longtime fan of the beautiful landscape, Howard first visited the country at age five where her dad, Ron Howard, was directing the fantasy film Willow.

“It was like stepping into a portal and stepping out into a magical kingdom,” recalls Bryce. “The green was shocking, the mountains epic, the water full of what looked to me to be sparkling diamonds. I have been chasing this experience my whole life. New Zealand is truly my ‘happy place.’”

Here, Howard’s must-see destinations when visiting New Zealand:

With the news that Pete’s Dragon star Bryce Dallas Howard is teaming up with Tourism New Zealand and National Geographic Travel to persuade North Americans to visit our shores, we felt it was time to remember the best moments of the 36-year-old’s screen career so far.

Starting out in some of her Dad’s Ron’s movies (Parenthood, Apollo 13, How the Grinch Stole Christmas), the flame-haired firecracker has delivered some impressive performances for directors as diverse as Lars Von Trier, M Night Shyamalan and Clint Eastwood.

Next scheduled to be seen on our screens in next year’s Jurassic Park sequel, in the interim has selected our five favourite BDH roles so far.

Black Mirror: Nosedive (2016)

Part of the third series of the popular sci-fi infused black comedies, this sees Howard play insecure office worker Lacie, a woman who lives in a world where everyone is rated out of five. The story follows Lacie as she pursues a higher rating and it probes modern humanities crazy, unhinged affair with social media and the instant gratification and anxiety that goes along with it.

Howard is both the smiling face and key to this darkly humourous and thought-provoking tale.

The Help (2011)

Part of a terrific ensemble cast, Howard was a memorable figure as hissable villain Hilly Holbrook in this adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s 1960s-set novel.

Ruling her Mississippi town with a big smile and an iron fist, Holbrook had the potential to be strictly one-dimensional, but Howard imbued her with a surprising amount of nuance and depth.

Jurassic World (2015)

In a sequel set more than decades after the events of 1993’s Jurassic Park, Howard is InGen’s senior assets manager Claire Dearing. Just three weeks out from the opening of the Indominus Rex, she’s forced to call in Chris Pratt’s Owen Grady to assess the facility for vulnerabilities.

At the heart of this smart, sassy and scary slice of blockbusting entertainment, Grady and Dearing’s spiky relationship offers a nice injection of screwball comedy amongst the carnage.

Manderley (2005)

Taking over the role of Grace Margaret Mulligan from Nicole Kidman (Dogville), Howard was given her first real opportunity to showcase her acting chops in Lars Von Trier’s second-act of his still-yet-to-be-completed controversial trilogy.

Like the earlier film, set dressing is at a minimum, Howard and company having to rely on their imaginations as much as anything to bring to life a cotton plantation circa 1933.

The Village (2004)

Howard is the poster girl for perhaps the most polarising of M Night Shyamalan’s twisty-turny thrillers.

Despite being surrounded by a cast of acting luminaries like Sigourney Weaver, Adrien Brody, William Hurt and Joaquin Phoenix, the 23-year-old steals the limelight with a powerful performance that also provides this tale of a small, isolated hamlet who live in fear of the outside world with its emotional core.

It’s the warm, laidback nature of Kiwis – above everything else – that made me fall in love with this beautiful place. If you want to truly experience New Zealand, you’ve got to put yourself in their shoes and embrace the Kiwi lifestyle.

Start with a good coffee
Coffee isn’t just a morning pick-me-up in New Zealand; it’s a way of life. Wellington is New Zealand’s coffee capital and my personal coffee heaven.

It’s no exaggeration when I say Wellington coffee is the best in the world – seriously, the best! Your barista will become your best friend. They’ll learn your name, what you like to order and make getting a coffee a personal experience – every day.

There are multiple coffee roasters in Wellington so a great cup of coffee is around every corner. While I never had a bad cup, my favorite cafés are Havana, Flight, Supreme and Mojo.

To market, to market
During my time in New Zealand I saw first-hand how farm to table has always been part of Kiwi cuisine. It’s absolutely commonplace to buy vegetables direct from the grower even in the city.

Popping into the market, grabbing a coffee and a delicious morsel for breakfast along with some fabulous produce is one of life’s absolute pleasures.

In downtown Wellington, the Harbourside Markets open every Sunday so growers can sell directly to the people who appreciate where their food comes from. In fact you’ll find a weekly farmer’s market in most towns and cities.

Actress Bryce Dallas Howard says her enthusiasm for New Zealand hasn’t dimmed since she first visited at age 5 and was so stunned by the scenery she felt like she’d arrived on another planet.

Howard this week begins a campaign to promote the South Pacific nation as a tourist destination to Americans and Canadians. Howard first visited New Zealand when her father Ron Howard was directing the 1988 movie “Willow.”

She said her home city of Los Angeles was smog-ridden at the time.

“We arrived at night, in Queenstown, and I’ll never forget this: I woke up, and there were these huge, huge windows in the house where we were staying. I looked out, and it was as if I’d stepped into a portal, or been transported to some other planet. It was like a Utopian version of Earth.”

She said she’d never seen such stunning mountains and fields, oceans and forests, and the experience opened her up to a world beyond her family’s life in the suburb of Encino.

Howard, who starred in “The Help” and “Jurassic World,” spent four or five months in New Zealand more recently while working on the fantasy-adventure “Pete’s Dragon,” released last year.

She told The Associated Press in a recent interview that filming the movie was a magical time for her because so much of it was shot outdoors. She visited a number of towns and saw everything from farm shows to ancient kauri trees.

Howard’s tourism campaign features videos shot by National Geographic Travel focusing on things like food, hiking and city life. Organized by Tourism New Zealand and funded by the nation’s government, the campaign cost about 2 million New Zealand dollars ($1.5 million).

Tourism is growing in New Zealand, and last year overtook dairy as the nation’s top earner of overseas dollars. About 3.6 million people visited in the year ending in May, with the most tourists coming from Australia, followed by China and then the U.S.

The surge has placed a strain on some services and towns, and upset some residents. In one recent survey, 21 percent of New Zealanders said they thought there were too many tourists, up from 13 percent in 2015.

Tourism New Zealand Chief Executive Stephen England-Hall said there is still room for the industry to grow, especially if tourists can be encouraged to visit different places and come at different times of the year. He said Howard was a natural fit to promote New Zealand because of her genuine love for the country.

Howard said two of her favorite places were the capital city, Wellington, because of its vibrant markets and community of hipsters and entrepreneurs; and the relaxed beach town Mount Maunganui.

She said New Zealand was relatively safe, not only from crime but also because it lacked snakes or other dangerous animals. The travel time and jetlag from the U.S. aren’t as bad as many imagine, she added.

“Globally, we’re going through this intense time, with high levels of anxiety,” she said. “It’s been proven again and again that what’s most valuable, how you find happiness, are experiences rather than things.”

In the first movie he seemed to be under constant attack by rampaging dinos.
But it seems Chris Pratt’s latest enemy is the ocean itself, as he and Bryce Dallas Howard struggled to clamber out of the surf on Friday while shooting Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom in Oahu, Hawaii.
Chris, 38, is reclaiming his role as Owen Grady, while Bryce, 36, is reprising her role as Claire Dearing.

During filming, the duo could be seen scrambling on their stomachs towards the beach as the ocean roils around them.
Of course the downtime between takes meant that the stars could cavort in the waves in a sillier manner, leading at one point to the pair basking in the sun together.

The ending of the “Jurassic World 2” has reportedly been changed. The script was originally written by Colin Trevorrow, but there have been rewrites apparently. Meanwhile, cast member Bryce Dallas Howard has shared a new picture from the production set, and teased filming scenes with dinosaurs.

The cast members aren’t allowed to share any spoilers of the movie, including pictures of dinosaurs and other set pieces. Howard (Claire Dearing) shared a picture of some trees from the set. In her post she said some of her “co-stars” are so tall that she has to really look up, which is an obvious reference to dinosaurs.
